Ask the Pharmacist

I have high cholesterol, but I don't want to take statins: could Cardiol be the right product?

I am 34 years old and have the problem of high cholesterol. RIsults last analysis: c. total 260; c. LDL 195; c. HDL 39; triglycerides 128. I am a civilian pilot and would like to avoid taking statins, also considering my young age. I would like to know if Cardiol might be the right product. My lifestyle, because of my job, does not lead me to have much time for sports. For food, I try to select fatty foods as much as possible.

Dear Domenico,
the first piece of advice I would give you to suggest what to do to lower cholesterol without statins is to try to eat as healthy and varied a diet as possible:

  • Do not make drastic cuts in your diet;
  • Do not overconsume fats, but do not eliminate them completely. Rather, prefer unsaturated ones typical of vegetable oils and fish;
  • Eat fish at least 2-3 times a week;
  • prefer whole-grain carbohydrate sources (cereals, pasta, and bread) over "refined" ones (such as white bread and flour): foods rich in fiber and slow-release starches are absorbed more slowly and keep blood insulin levels more constant;
  • consume at least 5 servings a day of fruits and vegetables, preferably in season.

Regarding more specifically your cholesterol problems, take into account how high your cholesterol must be to take statins. The parameter you need to take into account is LDL cholesterol, which is the one commonly called "bad" cholesterol. In fact, to figure out when to take statins for cholesterol, you need to assess your LDL levels along with your cardiovascular risk, which can be determined by your doctor based on a score that depends on multiple factors. In general, I can tell you that, even for people at low risk, LDL levels above 190 mg/dL, such as those you reported, are compatible with taking these drugs.

To answer your question about what to take instead of statins to lower cholesterol, and go into more detail about how to lower "bad" cholesterol without statins, I suggest that you consider with your doctor the use of Eulipid, a statin-free supplement that bases its action on the properties of berberine from Berberis aristata. Berberine acts on cholesterol levels by a different mechanism than statins, increasing its recovery by the liver. In addition to berberine,Eulipid provides resveratrol from Polygonum cuspidatum, bioflavonoids from Citrus reticulata, alpha lipoic acid, vitamin E, polycosanols, and coenzyme Q10; this formulation, taken as part of a healthy, balanced diet, can contribute to the cardiovascular well-being of people with nonsevere cholesterol excesses.

Possibly, to protect her all-round cardiovascular health, she could combine Eulipid with Meaquor 1000, a supplement of Omega-3 EPA and DHA, which contribute to normal heart function.

I reiterate the need for you to consult with your primary care physician to assess the most suitable choice for your case, taking into consideration your health status and possible interactions with any medications or other supplements you routinely take. Through such an assessment, your doctor will be able to determine whether Eulipid, possibly in combination with Meaquor, is suitable for your case or whether it is better to opt for a cholesterol-lowering drug without statins. In fact, there are also anti-cholesterol drugs without statins.

Your doctor will also be able to give you details about the mode and duration of treatment. It is indeed difficult to speculate how long it takes to lower cholesterol with or without statins, even

more without being aware of more details about his health status.

I hope I have been helpful and invite you to contact us again if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Silvia Soligon, PhD
