Ask the Pharmacist

Sintrom and cholesterol, can I take omega-3?

Can Cardiol and Sintrom be taken at the same time? These are my values: total cholesterol 240, LDL 180, HDL 48, triglycerides 120. Thank you

Dear Gaetano,

Unfortunately, the Cardiol and Sintrom association is problematic.

  • Sintrom is a drug based on coumarin derivatives with antithrombotic effect. Therapeutic treatment with drugs in this class requires special attention in terms of dosage and interaction with other drugs and with dietary supplements based on plants and medicinal extracts.

Based on the above, we do not recommend that you combine Sintrom therapy with a dietary supplement such as Cardiol, as Cardiol has in its formulation:

  • Both omega-3 fatty acids, which can have a long-term anticoagulant effect and are contraindicated in cases of antithrombotic therapy
  • both different plant extracts that might interact by altering the action of Sintrom.

Therefore in your case we would not recommend that you also combine any omega-3 supplement. The alternative we might recommend is the product Eulipid:

  • Eulipid is a dietary supplement that does not have omega-3 fatty acids in its formulation
  • acts on the regular activity of the cardiovascular system by harnessing the beneficial effect ofberberis aristata extract, which is rich in berberine.
  • The recommended dosage is one tablet of Eulipid daily to be taken in the evening near dinner.

We recommend that you consult your treating physician about any dietary arrangements (diet, dietary supplements) you plan to take, as well as discuss the possibility of using our products. Your doctor is aware of the medications you are taking and the possible interactions with the ingredients in the dietary supplements, and will therefore be able to indicate the most correct therapeutic approach for you. I remain available for further information.
