Ask the Pharmacist

Tendonitis and osteoarthritis, can omega-3s help?

I am bewildered, because the rheumatologist is transporting me to a complete shoulder replacement,so is the orthopedic surgeon, but I am struggling with osteoarthritis, tendonitis with cartilage destruction,in addition to cortisone infiltrations,3 in three months and three in another 3 months of hyaluronic acid, methotexate therapy and pool in water at 34 degrees,I have projected to avoid taking oral cortisone(I can't take it anymore) and perform a more correct dietary diet .now I would like to know if I can land to the consumption of omega 3 supplements and which ones I could buy,to keep in mind that I am hypertensive in therapy and high cholesterol not in therapy thanks

Dear Madam,

for both tendonitis and osteoarthritis could, in fact, find benefit in synergistic omega-3 and omega-6 supplementation adjuvant to drug therapy.

Indeed, several clinical studies have shown that polyunsaturated fatty acids (particularly EPA, DHA, and GLA) could play an adjuvant role in suppressing the inflammatory processes underlying chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases and in arthritis or tendonitis.

Following your doctor's advice, you may supplement your diet with 2-3 pearls per day of Omegor TwinEFA to be taken before a main meal-breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Omegor TwinEFA has a synergistic formulation of fish oil high in EPA-DHA (600 mg per capsule) and borage oil (rich in GLA 10 mg/cps).

This supplementation may gradually over time be useful to you:

  • for inflammation. The combination of omega-3 and omega-6 could in fact influence and moderate the production of the chemical mediators of pain (pro-inflammatory eicosanoids) in favor of other substances with anti-inflammatory action and resolving the state of inflammation. Both tendinitis and osteoarthritis are in fact related to inflammatory processes.
  • For pain. Progressively, this supplementation could also help alleviate the chronic pain associated with his condition and reduce the use of NSAID anti-inflammatory drugs.

I remain available for further information.

I recommend that you consult with your physician before undertaking supplementation, especially in view of concomitant drug therapies.

Sincerely,

Rosaria Ramondino, Pharmacist and pharmaceutical chemist.
