Ask the Pharmacist

Hyperactivity and Twinefa, which supplement is the right one?

I purchased Tweda for my son who is 7 years old and shows some hyperactivity and attention problems, lately he also gets a nervous tic with his head. Instead he has no problems with reading or memory which is very good. i am giving him one tablet a day which he takes very happily. I would like to know if I have purchased the correct product for him, what is the right dose, and how long he should take it.

Dear Milena,

as a general premise it is necessary to consider dietary supplements as a nutritional support with exclusively nutritional and physiological effects to promote the regular performance of the body's functions. The intake of dietary supplements of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA is particularly indicated in cases of their reduced dietary intake or increased need. Omega-3 DHA is useful for maintaining normal brain and visual function with a daily intake of at least 250 mg per day. Given the hyperactivity, I recommend that you have your child follow this supplementation always in accordance with the advice of the treating physician and suggest that you share with him the recent Oxford-Durham study on hyperactivity and behavior disorders:

  • This study evaluatedsupplementation with omega-3 (EPA and DHA) and omega-6 (GLA) in children with behavioral disorders for 3 months.
  • 117 children between the ages of 5 and 12 years with dyspraxia following the intake of an EPA, DHA, and GLA supplement demonstrated statistically significant improvement in behavioral, reading, and speech skills.

The dosage used in the study corresponds to about 2 beads of Omegor Twinefa daily to be taken before a main meal-breakfast, lunch or dinner. For this dosage in the above study, no side effects were noted. I would like to point out, however, that only the treating physician will be able to assess the applicability or otherwise of this type of supplementation to your child's situation and the hyperactivity he demonstrates. I remain available for further information.

Sincerely,
