Thyroid and hypothyroidism: does fish oil contain iodine?

Hi, I wanted to know if fish oil contains iodine. I am hypothyroid and cannot take iodine. Thank you. Martina

Dear Martina,

Here is my thyroid advice. Most of the iodine in marine organisms is in the form of iodide

  • but iodide is not soluble in oil-and therefore is effectively removed during fish oil purification steps.

As a result, the amount of iodine contained in Omegor products is infinitesimal: analyses performed on the oil we use in the Omegor Vitality product show an iodine content of 0.5 µg/g - 1.3 µg/g for one gram of oil - in one capsule of Omegor Vitality, there is less iodine than in a pot of yogurt! In fact, considering that one capsule of Omegor Vitality 1000 contains exactly 1 g of oil, this will be the maximum amount of iodine that is possible to find in a capsule.

I remain available for further information.
