Ask the Pharmacist

I have suffered neurological damage, at what doses can DHA help me?

Dear doctor, I am a 34-year-old girl, suffered neurological injury from neuroleptics (haloperidol decanoas depot administered not in TSO). Clinical examination showed radiotracer distribution inhomogeneity in both striatal bodies. It is my understanding that Omega 3 DHA may be useful: should I juxtapose antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C, lycopene, cerebral circulation enhancers (such as ginkgo biloba) or something else with the therapy? In what amounts should I take your supplements and any supplements to be juxtaposed with yours? And for how long? Thank you very much Monica

Dear Monica,

in view of the neurological damage suffered, dietary supplementation of omega-3 DHA might actually benefit her. This is for several reasons. Omega-3 fatty acids can provide useful supplementation in the neurological field because they can directly affect the production and release of certain neurotransmitters-such as serotonin and dopamine-that are essential for nerve impulse transmission. The fatty acid most involved in this mechanism is precisely omega-3 DHA

DHA is the omega-3 fatty acid most commonly found at the level of neuronal membranes. When optimal amounts of DHA are present at the neurological level, it happens that:

  • cell membranes are in a more fluid state, they release chemical messengers more rapidly into the synaptic space, and electrical signals pass more easily from one neuron to another;
  • Brain cells whose membranes are rich in DHA therefore appear to communicate more rapidly with each other;
  • DHA intake also affects the concentration of dopamine in the brain, as it increases the number of nerve endings that produce it.

VitaDHA 1000 for extra dietary supplementation of DHA

Based on the picture you describe, I recommend two possible supplements: liquid VitaDHA in single-dose vials and VitaDHA 1000 in capsules. These are two supplements based on highly purified and concentrated fish oil - which provide high concentrations of DHA.

  • VitaDHA liquid

It contains a lemon-flavored oil to allow easy administration as is or added to foods such as yogurt, smoothies or cold or lukewarm drinks. Each vial of the product provides 1250 mg of DHA and 360 mg of EPA the other omega-3 fatty acid with biological effects on our bodies. The recommended dosage for this product is 1 vial per day.

  • VitaDHA 1000 capsules

VitaDHA 1000 provides 470 mg of DHA and 100 mg of EPA per capsule. In this case the dosage ranges from 1 to 3 capsules per day to be taken at a meal-breakfast, lunch or dinner. A final piece of advice concernsnutrition in the broadest sense: in your diet, in addition to omega-3 fatty acids, it is good to favor foods rich in antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables that are sources of Vitamin C, zinc and Coenzyme Q10. In the case of pathologies and in the presence of ongoing drug therapies, the advisability of using omega-3 supplementation and the dosage to be used should be shared and decided with the treating physician - I recommend, therefore, that you talk with him.

I remain available for further information.
