Are omega-3s useful in peripheral neuropathy?
I have been diagnosed with pudendal nerve neuropathy. It would appear to me that Omega 3 would be helpful for peripheral neuropathy! Is there any truth in this. Thank you
Dear John,
in cases of peripheral neuropathy, the most recommended dietary supplementation is definitely alpha lipoic acid (ALA), so my advice is to consult with your primary care physician to start supplementation with this substance.
Alpha lipoic acid, because of its antioxidant and neuroprotective activity, is the only active ingredient of natural origin recommended in the treatment of chronic pain in various types of neuropathy.Dietary supplementation with alpha lipoic acid can be combined with that with the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, which is useful for several reasons:
- Omega-3s are found embedded in the membranes of all cells, including those of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Within membranes, omega-3s determine some important functions of the neurons themselves and regulate nerve signal transduction.
- DHA and EPA are precursors of molecules, "resolvins," which have an important immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect, both peripherally and in the central nervous system. This effect makes it possible to gradually reduce the use of anti-inflammatory drugs used for pain symptoms.
- Combining DHA with alpha lipoic acid increases the absorption and effectiveness of alpha lipoic acid compared to taking it alone. The product in our line that I recommend you try is VitaDHA 1000, at a dosage of 2-3 capsules per day to be taken with a meal. This is a dietary supplement based on purified and concentrated fish oil containing mainly DHA. In fact, each capsule provides 470 mg of DHA and 100 mg of EPA.
In case of swallowing difficulties, you may opt for the VitaDHA liquid product available in single-dose 6 g vials of lemon-flavored fish oil, in this case the dosage is one vial per day. I remain available for further needs and recommend that you inform your treating physician if you decide to start supplementing with omega-3 especially in case of concomitant drug therapies.
