Ask the Pharmacist

Cholesterol and Statins, can I take Cardiol?

Hi, I was prescribed 5mg triatec once a day 100mg cardioaspirin once a day and 20mg sivastin once a day due to hereditary problems and smoking. What do you recommend? Also can I take Cardiol forte and if so, how and when? If not, how can I take coenzyme Q10 since I understand it is very important?

Dear Conrad,

Cardiol Forte is a dietary supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA from fish oil, Artichoke extract, Monacolins from fermented red rice, Olive extract titrated to Hydroxytyrosol and Coenzyme Q10. Vitamin E, piperine and folic acid complete the formulation.

Monacolins and in particular, Monacolin K is a real a natural statin and its chemical structure is identical to that of lovastatin one of the categories of cholesterol-lowering drugs, so this product should not be consumed if you are taking cholesterol-lowering drugs. Unfortunately, we do not have a Coenzyme Q10-only product in our supplement line.

Since you already report the intake and interaction between different medications, we recommend that you address this specific question to your treating physician. You can talk to him or her about the possibility of using our products, and your doctor being aware of your medical history, the medications you are taking, and the possible interactions with the ingredients in the dietary supplements, will be able to indicate the most correct therapeutic approach for you.

I remain available for further information.

Sincerely,

Rosaria Ramondino Pharmacist and Pharmaceutical Chemist
