I take omega 3 in triglyceride form: can I reduce the dose to less than the 2.5 g recommended by Dr. Sears?
Hi - I take 3 pearls a day before meals of Omegor Vitality 1000 420 Mg of EPA and 210 Mg. of DHA. My question is, in order to meet Barry Sears' recommended dosage of 2.5 g per day, should I add perhaps one more? as the talk of the product's higher bioavailability on a 124% TG basis has created some confusion in me. Thank you Alberto C.
Dear Mr. C,
the bioavailability value he refers to in his email is the result of the study conducted by Dyerberg J. et al. on the 70% better bioavailability of omega 3 in triglyceride (rTG) form than in ethyl ester (EE) form.
The bioavailability values obtained by the authors refer to the most commonly available omega-3 preparations on the market. Plotting the values on a graph, it can be seen that formulations containing omega-3 fatty acids in the form of re-esterified triglycerides (rTGs)-which is the form of purified and concentrated oils such as Omegor Vitality-have the highest bioavailability, while concentrated omega-3s in the form of EE ethyl esters show the lowest bioavailability.
From this and other studies it has been shown that omega-3 in triglyceride form has better bioavailability than in ethyl ester form ranging from 50 to 70%. Coming now to your request, I recommend that you continue to take 3 pearls of Omegor Vitality daily, which provide you with an average of 2.1 g of EPA+DHA (taking into account the values of EPA and DHA reported on IFOS certificates) but due to the improved absorption of 70% equals about 3.570 g of EPA+DHA compared to the product recommended by Sears which is in ethyl ester form.
I remain available for further questions on this issue.
Sincerely, Dr. Rosaria Ramondino Pharmacist and Pharmaceutical Chemist
