Ask the Pharmacist

With bovine food gelatin, is there no risk of contracting mad cow disease?

Dear Doctor with food gelatin is of bovine origin, isn't there a risk of contracting mad cow disease? I know the animals are controlled, but again this year the newspapers have reported cases of people with this disease. In case you can do that, could you not suggest to the company to avoid this ingredient?

Dear Georgia,

our gelatin is of bovine origin but is certified BSE/TSE Free: meaning it is free from the etiological agents of mad cow disease.

There is no risk of contamination because controls are very strict.

Sincerely,

Dr. Rosaria Ramondino Pharmacist and Pharmaceutical Chemist
