What kind of Omega-3 supplements is best to take during pregnancy?
I am in my first month of pregnancy. I would like to know if your Omega-3s are EE type and if they have IFOS certification. What kind of supplements can I take in gestation? Usually the better gynecologists say to eliminate everything and take only folic acid. I'm afraid that by eliminating everything suddenly, (I used to take vitamin C, alpha lipoic acid coenzyme Q10 and Omega-3, since I'm 40 years old) my body will be affected. My gynecologist told me for the time being to eliminate Omega-3, but I honestly don't understand why, maybe because I am intolerant to anchovies and lactose?
Dear Monika,
Our product Omegor Vitality is an IFOS 5-star certified Omega-3 fatty acid supplement. Omega-3 fatty acids are present in Vitality in the form of re-esterified triglycerides (rTGs), a form that is more bioavailable, that is, more easily assimilated, than the ethyl ester (EE) form. Several scientific studies have shown that rTGs are absorbed 50 to 100 percent better than EEs.
A recent study by Dyerberg J., the author who first demonstrated the benefits of Omega-3s for cardiovascular disease, definitively showed that fatty acids in rTG form absorb 76% better than those in EE form. You can see the study at the following link: Bioavailability of marine n-3 fatty acid formulations.
Our product line presents a supplement specifically for the pregnancy and lactation period: VitaDHA Materna. VitaDHA Materna is a rich source of:
- 250 milligrams of very high purity and digestibility DHA;
- 400 micrograms of L-methylfolate, an easily absorbed form of folic acid.
VitaDHA Materna may be recommended from the 3rd month of pregnancy through the 6th month of breastfeeding. The recommended dose is 1 pearl per day, taken just before a main meal. The incorporation of DHA into the fetal brain hardens significantly in the last 3 months of pregnancy, so according to the advice of your gynecologist you may decide to start supplementation later.
If she wanted a product with a higher content of DHA (which is the most suitable omega-3 fatty acid in pregnancy) I would recommend one sachet per day of VitaDHA, a dietary supplement in liquid form that provides 1250 milligrams of DHA and 360 milligrams of EPA per single dose. Considering that she was already supplementing DHA with an Omega-3 supplement, she could take one sachet of VitaDHA daily until delivery.
After that, if breastfeeding, continue with 1 sachet daily for the duration of breastfeeding. If you are not breastfeeding continue with 1 sachet every other day until you are 6 months postpartum, and then return to a supplement such as Omegor Vitality.
I remain available for further questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Rosaria Ramondino Pharmacist and Pharmaceutical Chemist
