Omegor Krill: origin, characteristics and IFOS certification?
Good morning, I am interested in purchasing krill oil. I have read on other sites that the best source for this oil is the cold waters of Canada, do you confirm? There are several Krill oil supplements but I don't understand the difference. IFOS certification is a guarantee, is Omegor Krill certified? Thank you Elizabeth
Dear Elizabeth,
krill (Euphausia superba) is a small crustacean that makes up the zooplankton of cold Antarctic waters, where it constitutes one of the largest existing biomasses. It occupies the lowest rung of the food chain and for this reason does not accumulate pollutants, ensuring high purity of its by-products. Krill feeds on microscopic algae that are its primary source of omega-3 and the antioxidant astaxanthin.
For krill oils there is currently no certification comparable to IFOS, (International Fish Oil Standards -International Fish Oil Standards). This is because krill oil is very different from fish oil and the parameters measured with IFOS would not be applicable in the case of krill oil. Krill oils are regulated by European legislation as novel foods, i.e., new foods, which were authorized only a few years ago for human consumption as dietary supplements.
This regulation establishes minimum requirements for purity, freshness and concentration in EPA and DHA. Omegor Krill is a supplement that has much more restrictive limits than those imposed by law. Omegor Krill (derived exclusively from Antarctic Krill) represents a new, more concentrated krill oil obtained through innovative technologies. Below are the characteristics of Omegor Krill compared to common krill oils.
- High in EPA/DHA: Omegor Krill is produced with a patented technology that ensures 50 percent more omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA than common krill oils.
- Higher percentage of phospholipids: more than 68% phospholipids compared to common krill oils. Phospholipids are the main constituents of all cell membranes therefore omega-3s carried by phospholipids are rapidly absorbed and efficiently utilized by our body. 30% more absorption compared to fish oil in triglyceride form.
- Choline concentrate: essential nutrient, as phosphatidylcholine becomes part of cell membranes and is implicated in the transmission of nerve impulses. It increases the concentration of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter implicated in memory. It also protects the liver from fat accumulation.
- Astaxanthin content: carotenoid with antioxidant activity that is responsible for the characteristic red color of krill oil and for acting as a natural preservative to maintain the freshness of the oil. Able to pass the blood-brain and retinal barrier, powerful antioxidant effect at the CNS level.
- Pure and free of unpleasant odors: patented technology ensures the purification of krill oil from pollutants normally found in the marine habitat such as mercury and other heavy metals, as well as dioxins and PCBs. Omegor Krill meets some of the most stringent quality standards. In addition, salts and residues of TMAO (trimethylamine-N-oxide) responsible for the characteristic unpleasant odor are removed.
- Blister packed: each Omegor Krill capsule is protected from air and moisture by aluminum and PVDC blister packaging. The best materials to preserve the quality of each unit of product until it is taken.
Two capsules per day of Omegor Krill provide 1180 mg of oil from Antarctic Krill - Euphausia superba; with a total phospholipid content around 57%, 82.6 mg choline, EPA+DHA 260 mg and 100 µg astaxanthin. These characteristics allow it, with only 2 daily administrations (2 cps), to meet all 4 EFSA-approved claims.
- EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function.
- Choline contributes to normal lipid metabolism.
- Choline contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism.
- Choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function. In addition, as already mentioned, Omegor Krill by its composition is useful in cases of stress, poor memory, mental and physical fatigue. For those facing intense professional and sports commitments.
Sincerely,
Beatrice Iozzino, pharmacist.
