Ask the Pharmacist

Does Cardiol have contraindications?

Dear Peter,

Cardiol is contraindicated in cases of known hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Monacolin K is present in the formulation: therefore, the use of Cardiol is not recommended in case of treatment with statins. For the sake of the record, I will quote a warning in the package insert: "If youhave cardiovasculopathy and/or hypertension, consult your doctor before taking this product."

This is a mandatory statement according to Ministry of Health regulations for all supplements that contain an extract of Citrus aurantium L. Citrus aurantium L. extract may contain synephrine, a substance with cardiotonic activity. What we use in Cardiol is a purified extract of the fruit (not the peel known to be rich in synephrine) titrated in bioflavonoids (tangeretin and nobiletin) with known hypolipidemic properties.

Synephrine can cause elevations in blood pressure with doses as high as 30 milligrams: in Cardiol it is present in trace amounts of 0.015 milligrams. Considering the insignificant synephrine content, and the fact that Citrus extract is purified, we believe that the portion of the warning regarding individuals with heart disease can be disregarded.

According to recent studies(Synephrine content of juice from Satsuma m... [J Agric Food Chem. 2008] - PubMed - NCBI) the synephrine content in 200 centiliters of orange juice is about 3 milligrams. The recommended dose of Cardiol is 1 pearl per day, taken in the evening before dinner. One packet is therefore sufficient for one month's treatment.

I remain available for further questions on this issue.

Sincerely.
