ADHD and hyperactivity: can omega-3 help my child?

Good morning, I am the mother of a 5 year old boy and while surfing the net for a few days I came across your site: I would like some advice to start giving my child Omega 3 supplements. My child is very bright and lively, for the moment there is no diagnosis of ADHD, as I have no intention for now to have him evaluated by a neuropsychiatrist, because while I see in him some behaviors that could hint at this "pathology," I am not convinced at all. So I would like to try giving him the supplements for a few months and see if things improve. M. is lively, he runs and jumps, sometimes he climbs where he shouldn't to see "what's there," physically he doesn't have coordination problems in fact he has higher motor skills than children his age, in the chair he moves around, he often doesn't listen, he doesn't look you in the eye, sometimes he only responds to you when stimulated, he tends to be very autonomous and doesn't follow what you are telling him if he has something else on his mind. On the other hand, however, if there is something he is interested in he changes completely, if he is hungry he sits and eats everything, if he is doing something he likes (swimming, the rides) he respects his turn, stands in line, if you ask him things he is interested in he answers right away, he always greets whoever he wants, if the games interest him he completes all of them, puzzles, construction, coloring pages, video games, so it's a little difficult for us as parents to tell if there is actually a problem or if these are normal growth steps of a somewhat "peculiar" character (from always). The little one goes to psychomotricity, only that if now on the hyperactivity and interaction with other children front things have improved a lot, there has been a focus on what is his emotional/cognitive development in interacting with others, so I would like to help him more from the point of view of attention, concentration, following the thread of a speech more than on the liveliness front. I understand it is not easy to explain in a few lines what a child is like, but I wanted advice just to try which supplements would be the most appropriate, I was thinking of VITA DHA by reading here and there, but I would like your opinion. Thank you for your attention.

Dear Madam,

As a rule, children with ADHD or attention or hyperactivity disorders find benefit in taking omega-3 DHA. Often, in fact, disorders such as hyperactivity, ADHD, and attention are related to specificdeficiencies in this fatty acid-acid that has very important structural functions at the level of the nervous system and retina.

Supplementing these nutrients with food could only benefit. So yes, based on what you describe, VitaDHA in single-dose vials is probably the most appropriate product for your 5-year-old child.

  • May start with the dosage of half a vial daily or one vial every other day for the first two weeks of supplementation
  • then can increase the dosage to 1 vial per day, providing for supplementation for a period of at least 2 months.

The oil can be taken as is from the vial itself or poured onto a teaspoon, as it is free of fishy odor or taste and flavored with lemon; or it can be added to white or fruit yogurt, spreadable cheese, smoothies. However, it is my understanding that your child has not been diagnosed with ADHD: therefore, should you decide to start supplementation with VitaDHA, I recommend that you check with your pediatrician first.

I remain available for further information.

Sincerely,
